In this case, I think the 4X4 is more than strong enough to support
the engine. Remember, the engine is also supported at two
other points: the two passenger side bottom mounts. So what
Quasi is supporting really looks like about half the engine mass.
A 4X4 that spans that distance (3.5-4 feet?) should be able to
support the whole load. And, as far as hidden splits are concerned,
one gets a pretty good feel as to what makes a good piece of lumber:
try to get a piece that has nice tight vertical grain, few if any knots,
and one with good mechanical properties, fir being excellent.
Quasi obviously used this to remove the transaxle. I'm sure the
car was supported with jack stands, if he had the occasion to roll
around underneath it!
