Voltage regulator replacement hints

In fixing an odd problem (see other post) I replaced my voltage regulator. Here are a couple hints if you check yours or go to replace it:
The brushes on mine were very worn down after 130K miles. Don't know if they were original or not. The new ones extended about 1/2" out of the holder so you can use that as a rough guide to determine wear.
I replaced the regulator with the alternator in the car. There are good directions for this elsewhere in the messages, but I found removing and/or moving various hoses and wires that could be easily moved or removed helped get the extra space I needed for my hands. I disconnected the large (battery?) cable from the alternator, two small hoses from the intake manifold, and removed a wire assembly clamp from the firewall.
Even with this I had a very hard time getting the new regulator in due to the long brush length. I finally held the brushes down by putting a rubber band around the brushes and the holder. Then I installed the unit, put the screws in just enough to hold it, then cut the rubber band, pulled it out, and tightened the screws.
Hope this helps someone in the future.
