I had a similar situation with my sunroof on my 89 9kt. The previous owner got the sunroof open and couldn't get it back down all the way even with manual cranking and they eventually broke the gear shaft on the sunroof motor.
I would proceed to check the switch and motor by unscrewing the motor and let it dangle by it's wiring while you turn on the ignition and press the switch. If the motor turns like it should then you know that it is not the switch or motor. It's much easier to test the motor this way as opposed to stripping a gear or breaking a shaft.
If everything spins fine as it should I would agree with Shawn and take your time dismantling the setup. This sunroof has two pivoting hinges that rotate a pin into a rail when the sunroof retracts after being in the tilted up position. When this setup works it 's great, but my experience is that when it starts wearing out it can get hung up quite easily.
My gear shaft was broken after this assembly had become hung up and was cranked manually with excessive force. The motor shouldn't have enough torque to break it's own shaft but err on the side of caution.
If you come to the point where you need to dismantle the sunroof and need a little guidance give a shout I did mine two weeks ago.
