Incomplete TCS Maintenance List

Danger!
Be especially attentive to checking the “lever for the LIMP-HOME wire.” This could suddenly cause the car to become undriveable in heavy traffic at high speed. Here’s an excerpt from the Service Bulletin on it:

“Throttle Body
In isolated cases it has happened that the lever for the LIMP-HOME wire has locked in an intermediate position about 12-15 mm from its rest position. In this event, the butterfly cannot be operated by the wire if the car goes into LIMP-HOME mode and the car is undriveable. No diagnostic trouble code is generated by this faultSpray CONTACT 61 through the lever's opening in the black plastic casing to lubricate the mechanism inside. Check the operation of the lever by starting the engine and switching if off again. The lever should then return to the fully withdrawn position.”.

Here's an incomplete list of things to do to prevent TCS problems. (Sources noted)

1. Check vacuum hose connections ( TSB).
2. Replace vacuum hoses at 100,000 (BB).
3. Check throttle butterfly. Should operate smoothly without binding (TBS).
4. Adjust kick-down cable. Check that it is “operating freely and without binding” (TBS)
5. If “check engine” light is on , read and interpret codes (BB and Townsend). Check operation of components indicated.
6. Check wiring for damaged contact pins (TSB)
7. Apply corrosion-dissolving spray to electrical contacts (TSB and BB).
8. Apply DC-4 to seals of electrical connectors. (BB).
9. Replace TCS Bleeder Valve.
10. Clean connection at Accelerator potentiometer (BB)
11. Clean connection at Throttle Position Sensor connection. (BB)
