Annie,
"R" stands for "reserve" - it's a European thing.
The distance-to-empty thing is "as accurate as the day is long". While it's a great system, it still relies on a mechanical thing in the gas tank to measure the fuel level, which is subject to wear & tear and various other influences.
Also, remember the system is predictive - it computes the distance based on your recent average gas mileage. It has no idea what your MPG is going to be in the future - it's just guessing. Scenario: you're traveling on the highway, getting maybe 28MPG, the computer says you've got 60 miles to empty. Then you hit a massive traffic jam and you're now only getting 14MPG. Now you've only got 30 miles to empty (at best), regardless of what the computer says.
FWIW, my personal rule-of-thumb is to try and make sure the display reads at least 40 when you pull into the gas station.
