my 86 did the same. Its was the AMM (that metal thing before the turbo after the air filter). I never really did anything about it except for the fix in the subject line. Also others have mentioned the AIC. That is on the intake manifold, its a round cylinder. If you want, you can take it off and clean it with intake cleaner by spraying the stuff inside and wiping it out with a rag. If you really want to clean it you can open it up. The way you do that is by prying the little tabs up with a screwdriver,opening it, spraying it. The TRICK to closing these tabs (as was shown to me by your friend and mine) it to using a little nut and pliers. This way the little nut can fit in the slot allowed for the tabs.
