If the alternator regulator/diode pack has failed your battery charging light on the instrument cluster should remain on after you start the engine indicating a fault condition. If the brushes have worn out you may see this same light glowing dimly or not coming on at all.

Also check that the "priming" circuit wire has not come off the alternator itself or is making poor contact - things can get quite grubby down there since the alternator is located right under the oil filler tube (nice design).

Batteries that are not being charged go flat fairly quickly especially in the winter months but not so you can see the voltage dropping as quickly as you did. I suspect that your alternator has been duff for a few days for the battery voltage to drop off so fast. Be aware also that a rapid discharge can damage a good battery so get it checked out when you have fixed your alternator problem.
