My stock CD player was giving trouble playing due to a faulty laser pickup, so I sent it to a dealer who forwarded it to Clarion service. When received it worked, but half the display area was not illuminated, similar to what you're experiencing. Back again, and this time the button lights didn't work. Back again for the third time and got it back last week: button lights still didn't work.

Lesson learned: Don't send anything to Clarion service. These people are idiots, and beyond this their tech support has given me poor advice on two inquiries involving CD changers. They told me the CD-625 would not work in my system, but Crutchfield (a reputable mail-order outfit) said that it would, and they guaranteed it. I bought it and it has worked perfectly for six months.

They also told me another model (CDC-635) would not play CD-R's, but at least one person on this board says their's plays them with no trouble. I asked them about a module available from Saab that allows connecting both a CD player and changer together in the same system, and they said it was a Saab part and they didn't know any more about it. I bought the part and it has a Clarion part number on it.

The bottom line is don't rely on Clarion's USA distributor for anything. Send to someone else--anybody!--other than Clarion.
