Rear window heater driving me nuts

Ok, so now I've tried 3 times to repair the copper lines of the rear window heating. Only 4 of these lines still work. The first two times I tried it the sophisticated way: Applying masking tape and carefully putting on the Bison silver emulsion that is supposed to be specially made for this purpose.
Both times it failed totally, so yesterday I carefuly cleaned up the whole lot again, and applied big blobs of this stuff over the gaps in the broken lines.
Only to find out this morning that NOT EVEN ONE of the broken lines has started working.
What am I missing here????????
A connected question: how can you measure these lines? There have been several suggestions here as how to do it, but I keep on finding that as long as only one of the lines is still working, you will measure (alsmost) continuity between any two points on the grid, since they are in parallel. Only if a line has more than one break, you will be able to measure it, because that would create an 'electrical island'. Can you only do it if:
- You got an extremely accurate multimeter;
- You are sure there is no transient resistance at your measuring points;
- You know the exact number of mOhm/inch of the copper lines.
Otherwise you would not be able to tell whether your measurement is 'direct' or via a 'detour' using one of the lines that are still intact, would you?
thanks,
Jan Geert
