Staying in lower gear vs. constant shifting (auto)...

Here's the scenario:
Have a new (6K miles) auto trans.
Also have BSR Stage 3 ECU, JT 3" exhaust, K&N filter, Hyperboost valve.
While cruising on the highway/parkway, is it easier on the transmission just to keep it in 3rd so the "gusto" is immediately there if needed, as opposed to keeping it in 4th ("D"), where it will need to be shifted to 3rd (manually of automatically) when needed (as in passing a slower driver)?
Maintaining a speed of 75 mph, the tach hovers around 3250 rpm's while in 3rd. I enjoy the torque-y feeling when I touch the gas pedal as the rpm's are up there (who doesn't?...).
Keeping it in 3rd means the engine is more readily available to move the car quicker since the rpms are higher, just as it would be in a car with a manual trans. 3250 rpm's is not damaging to the engine, since the redline is 5500+.
Leaving it in 3rd usually is only done on those trips when getting caught up in a contest with another vehicle, or when I feel like enjoying the mods I've installed. Other than that, I do leave it in "D".
