I had the Nokian NRV’s on my ‘98 CSE, and was very impressed with them. They were great in both dry and wet, but once it gets down below freezing, both the compound and the tread will send you either off the road or into a motel. For all but winter driving, they’re a great high performance tire. DaveW has an ideal setup with two sets of tires, if you have enough snow to warrant them, but I live too far south to get very much snow. Besides, when it snows, I drive my ‘92 9000. I got over 40k miles on my NRV’s, but at the end they were getting a bit noisy. When it came time to replace them, I decided I wanted a high performance all season tire (just in case I do get caught in the snow), so the NRV's were out.

I considered Nokian NRW’s after the NRV’s wore out, but I felt the NRW's agressive all season tread leaned a bit more toward winter weather than I needed, and I was concerned that tread design might also be noisy. I put Yokohama AVS dB’s on this time. I was surprised how different the Yoko’s were from the Nokian’s. At first I thought they felt softer on roll over, not quite as good on the turn in as the Nokiian, but after I got used to the tires, I like them a lot. They're not that much worse, mainly different. Now that I've had them a few months, I think they handle fine. They are great in the rain, a fairly high performer, but with a great ride, which probably is why they don't quite measure up to the summer, high performance Nokian NRV. Where the AVS dB’s really shine is in how quiet they are. It’ s amazing! I’ve driven most of the big tire brands over the years and nothing has been as quiet as these AVS dB’s.
