Note about oil level sensor Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Oil Level Sensor Test, Gene N ![]() ![]() |
The oil level sensor on my 9K was leaking oil. I went to the dealer to buy the o-ring (about $5, as I remember). The parts guy was surprised, because all he ever sells are the complete switch (about $30).
Most mechanics are paid by the task, not by the time. And if the fix doesn't take, they usually have to fix it on their own 'dime.' So if they think there is a problem in the switch area, they'll just drop in a whole new switch, when may times it's just a bad o-ring. After all, it's not their money. And it's nicer to put in a clean part. The chances of the switch leaking are remote, but they don't want the chance of a call-back.
Chances are a leak is due to a bad O-ring. Chances are not producing a signal is due to a bad wire or bad connector. It is possible that the switch itself is stuck, but if you pull it out, you can clean it off and remove whatever grit is clogging it. The only 'failure' would be if the float on the switch has sprung a leak and 'sunk'.
Note - the low oil LEVEL switch is only checked when the car is first started. Once the engine starts, most of the oil is flowing through the engine, so the level is no longer accurate. If oil level is low right at start, that indication is latched on the display until the car is shut off.
