As a followup, I adjusted the shift linkage this morning - shifts better but need to test drive. Will change the transmission oil after lunch.

For clarification on the process of adjusting the linkage on a 1994 model Aero, centre console is removed by extracting two Torx screws - one on each side of the console (covered by round trim pieces) using a T15 torx screwdriver. Then remove the T15 torx screw located just under the front of the shift boot - lifting the boot carefully just under the centre seem and you'll see the screw. Now the boot can be lifted up to access the shifter housing.

My car has a metal housing with a slot directly ahead of the shifter. I used a 9/64 inch drill bit to centre the shift lever in 4th gear - a small needle-nosed ViceGrip works well to hold the end of the drill bit.

In the engine compartment, everything went as specified in Townsend's procedures, other than having to use a 13mm socket to loosen the pinch bolt on the shift shaft. I used a large slot screwdrive to slightly pry the pinch bolt apart, and then used the screwdriver as a lever to move the linkage and keep it in place as I tightened the pinch bolt.

Total time - less than an hour.
