Thought I'd float a message into the SAAB community to get their thoughts on my shifting challenges.

In summary, any suggestions would be appreciated on 1) the difficulty engaging/disengaging 1st gear or 2) the "binding" reverse gear?

Details:
Just had the dealer replace the clutch and several oil leaks on the 1994 Aero - 260,000km - mostly highway driven. Just prior to having the clutch replaced, ran into difficulty shifting into 1st gear. Once in first gear, difficult to get out of it - double clutching and all. As well, difficulty using reverse gear - shifts okay - but when releasing the clutch, the car wants to go forward slightly, then goes into reverse - it feels like something is binding in the tranny - not smooth linear power. Also, when travelling along or accelerating, the transmission sounds normal - when decelerating, there is a 'rumbling' sound.

Had the clutch kit put in, replace rear engine seal. Drove away from the Saab dealership $2100 later, and at first drove okay - rumbling sound still there, though. Then the problems with shifting and reverse 'tightness' recurred.

Checked the shift coupler. Initial impression was that it was okay. But looking at it while someone was shifting, the coupler rubber was twisiting apart - especially when engaging reverse. Got out the tie-wraps and secured the coupler. The car never shifted so well! Have to get the replacement part soon.

Took it for a test drive and all seemed good.

Hopping in the car this morning ready to back out of the garage, I had difficulty taking the car out of 1st gear. Clutch seems okay. But after double clutching and tugging on the shifter, I got it into neutral. I proceeded to shift into reverse (shifted okay), but I have run into the same problem when disengaging the clutch in reverse. Initially tends to want to move forward but when clutch is fully disengaged, it moves backwards as though there is something binding in the transmission. No strange noises.

Any suggestions would be appreciated on 1) the difficulty engaging/disengaging 1st gear or 2) the "binding" reverse gear?

Cheers,
Peter
