Wow, what an unusual failure in a Saab. A rebuild might be possibly, but I suppose you'd have to pull the head first to check for cylinder wear. If everything looks good and you're comfortable rebuiling engines then you could always go for it. If there's a ridge on the cylinder, you can't see the honing marks, or a chunk of the piston/ring damaged the cylinder wall then rebuilding would obviously require boring and new pistons, making it pretty expensive. For $700 a usued engine might be the way to go. It's easier to pull both the engine and trans, but it just depends on what you want to do.
I wonder what caused the original problem. Perhaps a sticky injector on that cylinder was causing a lean coniditon. Any sign of lean out or detonation on the other pistons or plugs?

PS I'd be glad to drive an Aero to Alaska for you if you can wait until May. December could work too, but I suspect that might not be the best time for the drive (is it even possible in the dead of winter?)
