As roman said, remove the fan and housing. However, I've found you can replace the turbo without removing the exhaust manifold. You will have to drain the coolant, and you will need a new turbo-to-exhaust manifold gasket. I also like to replace the copper rings on the coolant banjo fittings, so they don't leak. Don't bother trying to get the top coolant banjo fitting off. Disconnect the pipe up on the right side of the head and leave the pipe attached until you get it off the car. Sometimes, rather than copper rings, the seals will be the two part (metal and rubber) rings. Mine had a mixture of the two. Copper on the turbo end and composite seals on the other. Sometimes the nuts that hold the turbo on can be a bear to get off.
If you get a rebuilt turbo, it will not have the 4 studs on the exhaust manifold side or the three studs on the exhaust side. You will have to purchase new ones from the dealer, or try to save them from your old turbo (sometimes easy, usually not).
