You would need to swap oil pump covers, because the 1990 has the crank angle sensor on it. For the same reason, you would need to swap harmonic balancers, because the 1990 has an aperture plate that goes with the crank angle sensor. You will need to move the distributor plug from 1990 engine (fills the hole where the distributor was) to the 1988 engine.

Take a close look at the lower engine mount brackets on the engine. The 1990 has different motor mounts, but I think that is a function of the body rather than the motor. If you had to swap engine brackets, that would be a pain. The rear mount is a bolt on, but the front one is part of the oil sump.

At some point, the head design switched from an external plastic pipe system to internal passageways (much superior) for delivering oil to the followers and camshafts. The 1990 definitely has it, I don't know if the 1988 does.

Other than that, and the DI Cassette that you mentioned, I think you should be OK.
