I've been using Castrol 10w-30 for a couple of decades now. I've never had any oil-related failures, and I've run engines to 140K, 162K, etc. I assume we're talking the Castrol GTX, the standard 'dino' oil, not synthetic.
I use Castrol, but I believe any of the decent brand name oils - Valvoline, Penzoil, etc., will work just as well.
I'm shocked at you paying $2.50 a quart. I assume you're in the US. I don't pay any more for Castrol GTX than for any other brand name oil. Most of the big discount chains (KMart, etc) sell brand name oils for about the same. I usually see Castrol for about $1.80 a quart, but I wait for sales. Everybody puts some oil on sale every week. I wait until Castrol comes on sale, then usually pick it up for about $1.20 a quart. I buy a couple of cases, and that keeps me going for a while.
I don't think Castrol is worth $2.50 a quart when Penzoil or Valvoline is $1.20 on sale. But Castrol at $1.20 on sale is worth it. Is it better than the others? Probably not. But it's been good to me.
