at least this is what I've heard. Apparently, both these brands leave a waxy or grimy residue behind in the engine that can build up. This can even happen from one oil change. I'm not sure what the nature of this is, but I've heard this from a couple of mechanics. Personally, I've used both (not in a saab) and it seemed somewhat okay, but I didn't remove the valve cover to inspect. This could have been what Andrew W's story was about. The lifters may have had build-up on it, and not worn out. I don't think you can simply visually inspect worn hydraulic lifters without taking them out and 'squeeze' testing them.
