The overall diameter of a 225/50/16 usually exactly the same as a 205/55/16. A 225/50/16 will be about .8" wider overall.
The width MIGHT give you a problem with rubbing on a 9000 CS. the stiffer suspension on Hans' '96 Aero prevents this. It certainly won't rub on the rear, but the outer edge of the tire might rub on the front fender over a large bump.
That being said, if you decide to try 225s, I would highly recommend the Sumitomo HTR+ as an "Ultra High Performance All-season" tire sold at tirerack.com for $88. It only comes in 225/50/16. I've got a pair of these on the front of my '91 9000T and they're excellent. They have a treadware rating of 360, which is quite high. I would buy them again, but they sometimes rub the front fender (the fender flare is smaller on my car than post '93 9000s).
By the way, there's a basically new set of these being sold on ebay right now. You might want to check it out.
Another thing to note is that all tires are given a universal "wet traction" rating in which a rating of "AA" is the best (followed by "A" and "B" etc). You will find that the sumer tires that I recommended earlier have an "AA" rating, as well as the Sumitomos and the Dunlop SP 5000s.
The Michelin HX MXMs have a traction rating of "A" and a treadwear rating of 300, which basically make it a mediocre tire compared to everything else that I've mentioned (even the Yokohamas have a treadwear rating of 280). Toyo FZ4s are also 300/A/A.
Just some moer stuff to consider...
