and I would consider my car to be in excellent operating condition.
If you look at the bulletin board recently, now that the weather is really getting cold, you will notice how a lot of people are complaing that their car sucks after a really cold start.
After a cold start, all the fluids are sluggish, and all the engine components are experiencing thermal expansion a varying rates, some fast some slow. The colder it is, the longer it takes for the engine to reach operating temperature, and with reduced lubrication.
The oxygen sensor and catalytic converter will also be affected, not to mention that any and all moisture in the system not protected by an anti-freeze compound will be frozen.
It's like if you were to jump out of bed on a really cold morning and instantly start running, you'd probably hurt yourself, even if you were already wearing warm clothes.
The best thing to do after a cold start is to immediately start driving while refraining from high RPMs or boost. This will provide increased oil pressure and warm the engine more quickly, without producing any unnecesary strain. It will also reduce harmful emissions, as a car produces about 10 times as much hydrocarbons after a cold start than at operating temperature.
