child car seat quandry regarding my 9000

(This message originally appeared in the general bulletin board. I got so little response that I'm trying again here, among folks who might have faced (and solved?) the problem. Or those who haven't read the fine print and recognized it yet. )
Safety-- what an odd issue for a Swedish-car owner to be troubled with. But my '95 9000 has me in a quandry. I'm utterly convinced that the safest spot for my precious one & only is smack dab in the middle of my back seat. The kid has outgrown the standard 40-lb weight limit of her seat's 5-point harness. At this point, every manufacturer and safety authority advises switching over to a booster seat. Trouble is, there's no shoulder harness in the middle position of my hatchback, so she'd have to move over to a side seating position. That has to be an added danger, since my town, Denver, is teeming with heavyweight, high-riding suvs and pickups, racing through intersections on red lights. Side impact crashes are my worst fear, and that's why I want to keep my kid in the middle. Heck, I wish I could drive from the middle! I just don't know about that shifter between my legs...
I'm searching for a child seat that has its own 5-point harness that's rated for 40-80 lbs. That should hold her 'till she's at least seven-- they make 'em big these days.
And why are there no other posts on this topic, except for one? Don't SAAB owners have sex, followed by the consequences?
