Thanks for trying, but I don't think I've heard a suitable answer here yet. Tapani, the Racaro seat uses the car's own belts, leaving me the problem with the center positon-- no shoulder belt. And I'm sure that's necessary, Michael. I've read that lap belts can cause severe abdominal injuries as they concentrate the restraint force into one line across the lower body. Meanwhile, in a frontal collision, the upper body folds like a jacknife, allowing the kid's head to move two feet until it hits her knees, or slightly better, a padded bar in the child seat! But the best practice in safety restraints is to prevent any forward acceleration of the body after impact. That's why our cars were some of the very first (beginning in '86!) to have those "pyrotechnic pretensioners" set to tighten the belts, shoulder harnesses first, at the initial impact.
Finally, Eric, I don't plan to get hit on either side., My past history and currently cautious driving habits mean I'll probably get hit from behind. Again.
So for now, I've decided to keep my little big girl in the same seat, in the middle, secured by a lap belt plus the top tether I installed over the seatback long ago. Yes, she's 52 lbsw. at 5 years. Yes, she violates the federal standard of 40 lbs max. in this class of seat. But I believe that, for whatever reason, the weight standard is unrealistically low. I think it's not based on the real capabilities of the child seats, but some other consideration, like selling people on booster seats before kids bet bigger and parents might be more tempted to skip that stage and just use adult belts. Her current "40-lb." seat has straps of woven nylon that are barely thinner than SAAB's adult belts. I could hang off a cliff on these straps, and they're certainly strong enough for her. When she's too big to fit a 5-point-belted seat in a few more years, I plan to buy something like a Subaru Forester, if it has full belts across.
By the way, it isn't just my morbid interest in crash dynamics. The cute little bugger is easier for me to check out and talk to when she's in the middle, in line with the rear view mirror. She has more leg room in the middle, and she can see through the windshield, between the seats.
