Just bought my third turbo SAAB (95 CSE). I recently retired an 88 9kt with 256k. Still runs great, but no a/c, headliner, rougher ride, etc. 9kt has original turbo with no major engine work at all. Turbos in particluar require excellent fluid maintenace. I used 10-30W every 3k miles. As with all turbos, take it easy until the engine is warmed up. Also, don't shut off the engine after running hard (wait 30 sec or so). In my experience, turbos are not a real reliability issue any longer.
Ther are things you can do to check the operation and life of the turbo. You can read other posts, but make sure the boost gauge touches the orange at full boost. You can also check the play in the turbo shaft to make sure the bearings are tight. Again you can read the particulars in other posts.
In general, I think the performance Vs. gas mileage is great with turbos and would have no qualms with recommending them. Just do your homework on the maintenance history (as best as you can) of the car.
Good luck.
