A few questions, please. Is your car a turbo? If so, it is full-pressure or low-pressure? Is the car tuned? Have you still got the problem or has it gone away? If a turbo with a boost gauge, what does the gauge do, and how is this different from what it did before? Have you recently changed anything (eg put in different plugs or fixed something in the engine? When yo say "stepped on it", were you really hammering the poor beast right up to the rev limiter or just letting it rip in a general Saaby sort of way? All information gratefully received!
Some background. As far as the wastegate is concerned (se DougS's post) I think it's more likely that the actuator rod has become disconnected. If the wastegate is operating properly under ECU control on a full turbo, you won't get this drastic power loss (it's supposed to manage the boost and protect the engine, not spoil your fun).
You might get fuel cut-off by the ECU if you overboost but that's different and the effect will go away when you are driving less hard. Don't think anyone with a normally-tuned car will encounter this unless something else is amiss.
The so-called "hooter valve" that sits on the metal intake tube from the air cleaner (black plastic with 1 small hose and one say 1" diameter) can certainly fail and is a cheap thing to replace. It's the nearest thing to a blow-off valve in the system. Also, the boost pressure control valve mounted behind your radiator (three small hoses) can fail: this controls the wastgate. More expensive to replace, but vital to correct operation. In both cases, suggest you search this board for all the info you can eat.
The red Direct Ignition cassette that plugs onto the spark plugs is another suspect, but from what I read here, and personal experience, it seldom fails all at once and is more likely to give you intermittent missing which is recognisable as ignition-related.
If you have changed the plugs check that they are the correct NGK ones for your engine. If not, change them anyway. While you're about it, look at their colour and condition. However I doubt if this is the cause of your problem unless one has actually failed.
Also check other fluid levels etc. to see if something else is wrong - for instance, is your temperature gauge behaving as normal? You might have a head gasket problem.
Finally, or maybe first of all, you need to check absolutely all the hoses related to the turbo system (assuming you have one) for leaks or, of course, for having just popped off. Cars in some markets have a charcoal canister hidden in the right-hand wing and hoses have been known to come detached here.
