So you've got a coolant leak Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() |
It's that time of year again, where in many places it's getting really, really cold. And you come to your car and see a puddle of coolant under it.
Before you panic, take a nut driver and start tightening hose clamps. The big offenders are on the upper and lower radiator hoses.
In really cold temperatures, the engine goes through a bigger temperature swing than in summer. This expansion/contraction cycle loosens hose clamps. When the car is warm, everything has expanded and fits tight- no leaks. When everything is cold, the system is unpressurized, and no real reason to leak. When you start up or shut down the car, things cool down at different rates, and you can get leaks for a short period.
If you're getting leaks, tighten those clamps. I'll bet you find one or two that'll take a turn or two. If you aren't getting leaks, grab the nutdriver and check your clamps, so you don't get surprised.
