replace radiator

Apparently the top hose to my radiator (1991 9000 CD Turbo Automatic) has become disconnected from the radiator because the plastic tube that connects them has corroded and broke.
I am told that the only solution is to replace the entire radiator.
1) Is there a solution short of replacing the radiator?
2) If the radiator needs to be replaced what should the work itself cost (i.e. how many hours work)? (I've already priced the radiator $230 from local dealer or $169 from sobstory), but I want to be able to call b/s if the mechanic suggests a huge labor cost.
3) Is this a common problem and any suggestions on preventing recurrence? sobstory suggested switiching to Mercedes Benz coolant. Any thoughts?
4) Should I have all the hoses replaced at the same time. I just had the lower hose from the coolant resevoir replaced last week, but some of the posts here suggest that the hoses tend to go bad around the same time.
A quick response would be extremely appreciated as the car's already at the mechanic and I have to make a decision quickly to tell them whether to go ahead and fix or not.
Many thanks.
