Owning a 1992 9000 Cde- 2.3i - Auto ... here's my two cents answer at your question, Wayne.
I am not a mechanic at all ... so, here's what I think about the 2.3 non turbo engine : it is a smooth engine. Sometimes too smooth actually. When you're going from a stop to accelerate to reach a 50 or 60 km/hour speed ... it may take a moment .... after all, don't forget that this engine moves a more than 2.000 kilos vehicle. But, when you reach a cruisin' speed, you'll find that this engine is also able to be very very very quick in its responses and demands .
I am living in Belgium where BMW's and Mercedes are common on the roads. I had never to be ashamed of the performances of the 9000 facing those german cars.
The engine is quite discrete, powerfull, reliable. It goes very well in the summer's heat or in the extreme cold of the winter. It doesn't overheat in the traffic jam ... but there's no doubt that it is a freeway devoted car. If you service this engine quite often and well with the good products ... it will give you what more recent german cars provide you : power and steadyness. It is not an agressive engine but it is like a discrete puncher on the ring : when needing, it comes right away and fast.
In town, it drinks about 11-13 liters for 100 kilometers. On highways, it is rather between 6-8 liters.
I have done every type of roads with it ... mountains in extreme hot weather conditions and plains in a siberian cold. This engine stays with you and provides you security, power and comfort in all discretion. This engine is a good reliable buddy. The one that doesn't sparkle in the meetings and social events. But the precise one that stays with you when you need him if you follow this image. Be nice to it ... and it will be very nice to you. And remember it is full of nice surprises behind its gentle appearance.
