I just finished modifying my shifter (92 9Ks) and thought I would add to what I found in previous postings, since I discovered a few things no-one else encountered or discussed.
I'm not sure if this is a non-turbo issue, something changed for '92+, or just "Andy's car only", but the ball on my shift lever is held onto the rod by circlips above and below the ball, so I had to machine new grooves in the rod (using rod chucked up in the drill press with the dremel to do the cutting-not the ultimate way to do it, but it worked). I also had to cut down the plastic collar on the shift linkage base as well as a steel bracket for the base of the dash to allow me to move the linkage base up .5" in front. Took me quite a bit more than 2 hours, but there were a few factors involved:
-Car has an armrest to remove to get the console out.
-Three-year-old loose in garage running around with 24mm wrench,
big screwdrivers, and 1/2" drive ratchets. Notable quotes: "I'll help you" and " I gotta get in here".
-I also remember dad saying "measure twice-cut once"
Even with the added time, the result is well worth it- it makes my WRC-style winter driving that much more satisfying. I moved the ball up .5", which made a pretty significant difference in shifter travel.
