It sounds like you have a broken or weak "A" accumulator spring. This has been extensively covered on this BB. It can be a DIY, if you are mechanically inclined, but it is not an overly expensive shop job. The trick is to go to a shop that knows the ZF transmission. You can also have them pressure test it while you're at it to make sure that the hydraulics are working properly.
The shift cable basically has three valving positions and is associated with the "B" accumulator. I have read on the BB and in the SAAB manual that on cars with the traction control system (TCS), it is important that this cable be adjusted very carefully. On cars without the TCS, the adjustment appears to be far less critical. It is basically adjusted to the kickdown point with the throttle plate held near wide open with a special fixture.
