The engine control uses the AMM to determine how much air is coming in, and it schedules fuel based on that. If you press the gas pedal and the engine seems to ignore you, it's not seeing the airflow - a bad AMM. Once you press the pedal far enough, the mechanical throttle switch is opened, and the engine control adds gas - and off you go.
Once you get over 2000 RPM, the engine control will add fuel, so response is better once underway.
Your best bet is to swap your AMM out with a known good one. Most AMMs look alike, but depending on year, they are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. Check the dash number on your part - probably -005.
The typical failure of an AMM is due to corrosion on the circuit board. Your best bet is to buy a rebuilt unit. Check the vendors that advertise on this BB - I've gotten AMMs from Sobstory before, on the order of $140 or so after core charge. I'm sure the others are fine, too.
