some terms of Mechanics' Slang only because I have seen it use a few times by an earnest car owner or two and it makes for a non-exact description of what happens:
To turn over = The engine turns over by any means.
To crank = Hand cranks were used on early engines to turn or roll them over which would start the process of firing.
Therefore: turn over = cranking or 'to crank'
To 'catch' or to 'fire' = Engine establishes a successful explosion in the firing chamber maybe just once, maybe several firings in succession.
To Run = continuous firing so that engine runs by its own by air and fuel.
So yours cranks over but won't fire and you smell the lovely odor of electrical burning. Looking back at your past postings I see you have a 90 model year, so remove the D.I. cassette, remove it's cover on the underside and look and smell for damaged areas items which are near the surface of the potting compound. I had one go out with such a stink that I could have sworn that the whole wiring harness had gone critical and melted down. This was after coming home from work and it drove just fine, but wouldn't start again. Luckily the other 93 became a test donator and I then called over to my dealer to hold one for me that next morning. Makes me consider belonging to the "I have a spare DI next to my tool chest club."
