...there are side effects to an ECU upgrade. For one thing, most will require a 3" exhaust system at least as far as the downpipe and cat ($175-750 depending on how far back you go). If your stock clutch is the least bit worn it may slip when boost exceeds 20 psi in 3rd-5th gears, and the answer is to install a stronger pressure plate (most commonly recommended remedy) or high-performance clutch disk. I just spent $850 on parts for my clutch job, and I'll be doing the work myself (with help).
In summer you will likely find that boost will drop considerably because of detonation, unless you can get 94 octane pump gas or higher, which I can't. In hot weather mine maxes to a level about the highest my stock Aero ECU could achieve (16-17 psi), and you are hardly reaping the benefits of that expensive ECU at those boost levels. The remedy? Water injection (~$500) or a racing intercooler (~$900). I've opted for the former, but haven't received it yet, and won't need it 'til summer anyway.
I'll report on it and the other upgrades in the months to come.
Add it up and you have spent far more than the initial $600 expenditure for a remapped ECU, but is it worth it? For me, I'm going all the way because the extra performance transforms a high-performance car to an exhilarating high-performance car. Would I do it again? I don't know, but I'm too far along to back out now. More later.
