Good time to do this. Posted by Gene N [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Balance/Timing Chain Getting Noisy-Who's done theirs?, Shahn, Wed, 19 Feb 2003 14:00:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 1991 had 120,000 miles on it when the timing chain snapped, and that generated a whole lot of extra work. Check to see if your chain has the split roller chain (generaly a bad thing).
I got all of my parts from Sobstory, but you could probably use any of the other bulletin board advertisers.
Just from memory here is the rough cost:
Timing chain kit (all gears, guides, chain, and chain tensioner) $160
Balance shaft chain $30
Balance shaft crank gear $50
Crankshaft oil seal $7
Oil pump O-ring $3
Locktite (now Permatex) anaerobic sealer $13
That is the minimum you will need.
Of course, if you find anything else bad replace it.
I would think very hard about replacing the idler and tensioner pulleys, the serpentine belt and possibly the belt tensioner damping unit ($30, $30, $20, and $90 respectively).
Quasi's site has a great write up by Robert Kaplan on how to do the job. The Haynes manual ($25) has a reasonable write up with some blurry pictures, and the Saab Basic Engine manual ($25) is also useful (more blurry pictures).
