commutator rings connected to a rotating coil, a stationary set of three coils, a 3phase full wave bridge rectifier diode pack, and a regulator pack.
The regulator throttles a small amount of current to the rotating field winding to induce a revolving N-S magnet of varing strength. The 3 armature coils each produce a phased alternating current, each phase being 120° apart.
They feed into a rectification pack which changes these 3 phases into a direct current with a little AC on it's top. (Without a battery to filter this out there would be whine on your audio amps.)
If the rectifier has a diode that fails open or short (generally heat will open a semiconductor junction and a voltage spike will short it-- jumped it lately?). If an open and the alternator is putting out low voltage DC, short a diode and there is a component of AC on the output of the alt.
By the way Chrysler came out with the alternator in 1961.
The regulator reacts to feed more current into the rotating field circuit if the voltage output of the alternator falls below a chosen point. It backs off when the voltage climbs to its setpoint.
Bad brushes, bad facing on the commutator rings = poor current flow to the rotating coil. Failed reg. chip and it's zero output or full out. Bad diode bridge and output is wacky. All this can be tested by standard automotive elec. shop gear. Does this help?
