Well it's a combination of hydraulics and machinery. Lots of "moving parts" gears, springs and seals that can fail.

Check how it works,,, for example: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission2.htm

The condition of the fluid actually indicates the condition of the tranny. If the fluid smells burned and is not red in colour then there might be something wrong with the tranny (or the fluid is very old). Anyway when buying a car with AT be careful with cars that have the bad fluid.

To avoid problems with stuck parts/fluid passages, seals etc. and to make the tranny work more smooth good fluid is required (remember that it has hydraulic "brains" and "nervous system"). The (more famous and) generally trusted brand _without_ any magic tv-shop addivites makes the tranny work smoother and last longer. There is one key word "Dextron II"- that indicates the type of the fluid that is used... Check your user manual and/or ZF site (a link to pdf) for list of fluids:http://wwwapps.zf-group.de/kst464/ZF_InteroeleV2_download/download.asp?doStatistik=1&doMode=1&mode=3&doID=1&id=56

One key thing is to change the fluid and filter (yes the box has pump and filter unlike the manual box!) with frequent enough intervals. If I remember right the Saab service schedule was something like 60k km / ~35 k mi. But most AT owners recommend that the fluid should be changed more frequently - especially since in one change only part of the fluid is changed. Another thing is a special procedure for AT fluid flush, but maybe this should be used when the fluid has never been changed in old tranny and/or there is some problems with the shifting...

One common understanding is that the repairs of AT are expensive, this bases on the common understanding that each time the tranny has problems it needs to be replaced with factory re-build one. However recently on this BB quite a few fellow Saabers have written that they have successfully DIY'd a AT with some gear changing problems back to normal function. These problems have been related with the covernor and it's springs and seals. Of course there can be also some major problems that one cannot fix,,,

How long the tranny works,,, well on this you'll get a very wide variety of opinions and experiences - the answer is somewhere between 0 to indefinite - I have a AT with well over 200 k miles on it...). Once a head of official Saab shop told me that the AT doesn't last anything or they never fail (so maybe there are the bad ones and the good ones...

Also you'll get different opinions on the AT,,, some people hates it so much,,, some would not change back to shuffling the manual box by any prize.

Well nowadays all the top models of the super cars are equipped with the electronically driven "button on the wheel AT"'s, but that's a totally different story ;-)
