Do what George says, check out the serpintine belt idlers, waterpump, alternator, etc before getting into the engine. Get a wood dowel 1/4 or 3/8 in dia. about 18 to 2 foot long and CAREFULLY place one end against the bearing of each item the belt goes over. With your thumb over the other end of the dowel, place your ear against your thumb. You will be able to hear the noise the bearings make. One that really sounds rough is suspect while a steady hum - whir is ok.
