Checked out my transmission stub shaft bearing replacement today after waiting quite a while for JB Weld to cure. That all seems OK, but I had also replaced the alternator with a rebuilt because the slip rings were badly worn. When I started the car it had a bad whine and an intermittent tinny grinding noise. I had given the battery a good charge while things were disconnected and thought it odd that it sounded like it was working hard. Drove over to the parts place where I got it, they listened to it, agreed it sounded bad, and gave me another one. I took out the first one and discovered that one of the four screws that hold the body together had come loose and had apparently periodically hit the fan under the pulley, hence the grinding noise. The replacement didn't come with a pulley so I had to take the one off rebuilt #1. The nut was very tight and there was no woodruff key. The pulley had a wider keyway than the shaft. I ground a custom key to fit and put the pulley on rebuilt #2. Put #2 in the car and then realised that I couldn't hook up the wires because the body was rotated 90 degrees off.

How bad are these units anyway? I gave up on rebuilts 15 years ago after similar experiences. I could take #2 apart and reassemble it so it fits or demand my money back and go get a used one from the junkyard. All I'm interested in is 40-50k reliability.
