the rebuild supplier is suspect. I took #2 in to the store this morning, they acknowledged clock position was off, but didn't have another one to give me. Since I wanted to get through this mess, I asked if it would void the warranty if I rotated the body to the correct position. They said no problem, it was already considered defective. I took it home and started in on it. Not wanting to stress the brushes, I pulled the VR brush pack. When I looked in at the slip rings I noticed a pronounced ridge. Haynes says 27.2mm minimum. I pulled the thing apart and measured 26.6 and 27.0. Brought it back to the parts store and we all agreed the rebuilders had probably just washed it and put in a new VR brush pack. They gave me my money back, and a labor claim form, but my old core (with worn slip rings) is in some pile somewhere. I'm going to talk to the owner, who I've known for a while, tomorrow.
What a pain, but at least the car is in my own garage and only two of our aged fleet of three vehicles need to be on the road at any given time. I think I'm going back to my old practice of taking my chances with junkyard units, though. I wanted to fix my old one myself, but didn't know where to get parts.
