The most dramatic improvement is usually obtained by upgrading the speakers. The originals die from heat and age. (Actually the replacements do also but not immediately.) 4 inch in the front and 6 1/2" in the back. The separate Saab tweeters can be cut dead and left in place as the new ones will be 2-way (front) and three-way (back). This will cost less than $100. The next best thing is to add a power amplifier. This will generally run off of the existing speaker outputs if your original equipment is THAT good. Personally, I'd rather have an up-to-date cassette or CD receiver. I would add a small subwoofer in the rear. A 12" is plenty if you're over the age of 18. This single item will change your life. The power amplifier can be mounted over the tool box in the right rear. I used two bolts through the cover, a piece of heavy plastic across the amplifier, and two wing nuts to hold it in place. Getting to the tools is still possible by removing the wing nuts.
While it is possible to run it off that EQ, you would lose the benefit of the new higher wattage power amps built in to the new receiver. I'd use the built in power for the fronts and possibly the rears also. However, if you get a four channel power amp; you can use two channels for the rears and the other two bridged for the sub-woofer. I didn't. My sub is the only thing on the new amp and I am well pleased with the results. A Kenwood cassette receiver (with the proprietary CD add-on unit) runs all four main speakers. My setup takes two DIN spaces so I lost the little storage compartment in my '88. Yours is alread taken for the factory EQ unit. I don't think you'd miss that EQ with adequate bass (something hard to come by without the sub) but several options are listed here in far too many words. Have fun.
