Actually the self-restoring bumpers first appeared in the early 1970's on the 99 model, and then on the 900 when it was introduced in 1979. I think it disappeared on later C900's and early 9000's, then reappeared later as you indicate.
Basically inside the bumper is a polyethylene part made up of "cells" - similar in appearance to the cardboard dividers you see in cases of wine etc. except the cells are smaller, about 1" on a side. This is sandwiched between the bumper cover and the inner strucural metal part.
When an impact occurs, the poly part collapses and absorbs energy. When pressure is released it reverts back to its original shape - sort of.
It's not a perfect system, but a lot better than a hunk of metal that when bent will stay that way forever!
