And now the bad news. The world is a cruel place.

Look at it from the position of someone buying the car. You may have spent $1K or $20K on the car; it doesn't mean much to them. The receipts for body work in '97 is actually a BAD thing. People don't like buying cars that have been hit and fixed.

Let's look at the strikes against the car-
It has a bent fender. You can have a car with a fresh engine and transmission, racing quality, and all it takes is a few dings and the price is cut in half. I would rather sell a car with flawless paint and a siezed engine - it would be easier. Actually, I have. People buy cars for looks. If they're buying it for utility, they're looking for cheap.

The A/C doesn't work. This is not a selling point. Anyone who is reasonable will assume it'll take another $1K to fix.

The car has 280K miles. For anyone that doesn't know Saabs, they stopped when they saw the mileage. For anyone that does know Saabs, they stopped when they saw the mileage. How many more miles can one reasonably expect before something really expensive breaks? 20K? 50K? If they buy the car for $3K and it's trashed in 50K, that's a pretty expensive car.

What's fair? Look in the paper. People won't pay a fair price. They'll pay the least they can to get what they want. See what other similar cars are selling for. KBB is a guide, not a guarantee. My guess is that you'll find cars with half the mileage and no dents for $3-4K. Just as a guess, I'd say that due to the mileage and fender, you'll be lucky to get $2K.

Look at it this way - if you saw this car for the first time, how much would you pay? How cheap does it need to be before you just keep looking in the paper for a better car?
