Hi Eric and All,
The part number I posted was ONLY for the "lower section",
which is the cover and insulators.
This helps when you have a burned insulator and the spark
is going nuts and making the car buck and such - BUT - if
your DI has failed, that is likely the electronics in the
upper portion, and this part will not likely help at all.
This part is specifically for the '93 and newer DI's, and
they are called 'updated'.
Yes, they are encapsulated in epoxy or the like, and what
I have learned seems to indicate it was as much to prevent
'repair' as it was to keep stray sparks at the 50,000 volt
level from causing damage inside the DI unit.
As any person with electrical experience knows, it is very
difficult to isolate any AC electricity once it gets higher
than around 1000 volts - and the higher it gets, the worse
the problem becomes.
If your DI unit is working, but behaving badly, I would
recommend trying that part before replacing the whole unit.
Be very careful to be exageratedly clean about it, and what
I found was that even doing it on a damp day allowed
moisture into the unit's guts, and it took a day or so to
stop bucking and farting - I suspect because all the
moisture had to be 'burned off' before it normalized.
Presently, I have a 'test DI' in my car, because of a hard
starting thing that began right after the head gasket was
replaced.
I may buy one, just to have it around, once my wallet
recovers from the HG job....!
Good Luck !
