It does all these things we have described plus a biggy: it helps lube the rubber of the boot which slips down over the plug and allows it to slip off without giving the guy or gal removing it a hernia. A dry boot stuck on a plug will bake on after just one heat up cycle of engine running and will seem like it is manufactured on the plug porcelain.
