Workshop crashed transmission

When visiting the authorised SAAB dealer to pick up a new muffler for my 1994 9000 CS ECO (LPT), with automatic transmission, I asked the mechanic for possible reasons why the motor during hard acceleration suddenly looses power, drops about 500 rpm then accelerates again only to repete the process. If I reduce the throttel slightly the motor will accelerate normally.
To test the motor the mechanic started the motor applied the brake put the car in gear and accelerated, according to him, to between 1500 and 2000rpm (stall test). No strange sounds. When I explained that it only happens under higher load during passing He repeated the test but this time it resulted in a loud bang and a large pool of transmission oil under the car. It sounded as though he accelerated harder the second time but he says he only accellerated the same as the first time. If so why did he do a second test? If not with increased load.
The car is now waiting at the SAAB workshop for a mechanic to open the transmission and determin the cause. I have been told this will take more than a week probably several and I have not been offered any alternative transport.
Should the workshop assume any responsibility? Should I pay for the full repair?
