Michael:
I had this work done about +- a month ago on my '95 9000 CSE. When I was in for a 150k major service, my mechanic mentioned there was "slight" play in the belt, and given the mileage, suggested we replace the tensioner assembly, idler pulleys, serpentine belt etc. as a preventative measure. In an effort to save some $$ after the major service, I decided to hold off until my next visit to the shop. Wouldn't you know about 3 weeks later I started to notice some squeeking from the belt. Didn't put 1+1 together until one afternoon when I went to start the car. As soon as I smelled burning rubber I shut the engine down ... fortunately it was right outside the house. Upon opening the hood, I noticed the belt had jumped 3/4 off the "track." Fortunately, I was not on the road. Had to have the car flatbeded back to the shop, and glad I did. The tensioner had frozen.
I think the price you mentioned for this work AND a new radiator maybe a little on the low side, unless they are giving you a break. I would want to make sure they are not simply replacing the belt, but that they check the idler pulleys and tensioner assembly. Looking at my bill, these parts alone were $289.
