I had a 92 9000 T w/ 125K, which was having a fan relay problem, and the temp gauge got almost to the red a few times. I was always able to cool it down within minutes, but my head gasket was supposedly damaged.
I say supposedly because the car had lost some power and my mechanic said there were 'hydrocarbons' in the coolant.
You might ask your mechanic about such a coolant test.
I'm in Oakland, there are cheaper mechanics over here in the east bay!!!
