As Chris said, the history of the particular car is most important. However, there were some significant improvements in the engine and manual transmission made in 1994(5?) that I'd consider desirable. AFAIK, the automatic transmission design never changed (unfortunately).
DIY-wise, I think you'll find them all about the same, with the exeption that cars without TCS seem to require a lot less attention!
As far as turbo reliability, the T25 unit on the non-Aero full-pressure-turbo (as opposed to LPT) models works pretty hard, and can fail when you get above 100K miles. However, I suspect that using synthetic oil will help a lot with this.
I'm assuming you probably know this from reading this BBS, but the general consensus is that the V6 is an engine to avoid.
