It seems like if you ask 10 different people about 9000 auto-trans life, you'll get 10 different answers, at least! ;^)
My mother has an '89 CD with almost 200K miles on its original auto, it only had a fluid (not filter) change once, which I did when she first bought the car.
OTOH, a good friend of mine had to install the *4th* replacement (that's 5 total) box in his '88 when it had ~130K miles. One time I was at the parts counter at the dealer and another customer there had just gotten done installing his 3rd replacement tranny in a car with < 100K.
What I take from this is that it's a matter of luck. Seems like some come from the factory destined for a long lifetime, and others do not. Personally, it's a risk I wouldn't want to take, but that's just me!
Have you considered other models, like the NG900, 9-3, or 9-5? The autobox in those cars is a lot better, both in performance and expected longevity.
