"Fascist" clearly isn't the right term, if what we mean by fascist is the Italian corporate/autocratic political system of the period between the two world wars. However, it does seem to me (having lived in Europe for four years) that by comparison, the US legal system and the people who enforce it, ie., cops, are extremely heavy-handed. Just the fact that they have a revolver on their belt staring you in the face when you get the speeding ticket carries a certain weight, doesn't it? In France, they don't do that. Also, I've often wondered why they don't give tickets for changing lanes and making turns without using signals, yet pay so much attention to speeding. Tentative answer: Speeding tickets are easier to do, using radar, and less difficult to defend in court. Also: we live in a repressed Protestant society, and speeding, dangerous as it is, is also a sign of youthful exuberance, big no-no for the American Gothic types. If they were really concerned about safety, they'd ticket the fools who, by inattentiveness, don't signal, as much as they did speeders. Finally, if you don't believe the highway patrol system is oppressive, just ask a person of color. End of political plug, please deposit two cents. And drive safely.
